MBTA Pilots Nearly Unlimited Two-Hour Transfers
Beginning September 1, the MBTA is making it easier and less expensive to make multiple connections across its transit system.
More Transfers Within Two Hours
Under a new “Unlimited” Two-Hour Transfer Window pilot, riders can make a practically unlimited number of transfers among MBTA bus, subway, and ferry services within two hours of their first tap.
Riders will pay only the highest fare charged for any individual leg of the trip. Previously, the MBTA generally limited riders to two transfers within the two-hour period and placed additional restrictions on eligible transfers.
The pilot begins September 1, 2026, and will run for six months. Riders must use the same form of payment throughout their MBTA trip to receive the transfer benefit.
The expanded window could make multi-stop trips much easier. For example, a rider could take a bus and subway, make a quick stop, and continue traveling within the two-hour window without paying a separate fare for every MBTA leg.
The Fine Print
Older CharlieCards may need a quick update before riders can use the new benefit. If you have not added value to your CharlieCard within the past year, add any amount at an MBTA fare vending machine. This will activate the transfer benefit.
Payment method also matters. The MBTA notes on its transfers page that cash payments generally do not qualify for free or discounted transfers.
Two Other Fare Pilots This Fall
The transfer initiative is one of three MBTA fare pilots launching this fall.
The Elimination of Express Bus Fares will reduce premium express bus fares to the regular local bus fare during the pilot period. Read our earlier article about the express bus fare change.
The Car-Free Seniors pilot will offer free MBTA bus, subway, ferry, and Commuter Rail travel to eligible Massachusetts residents age 75 and older who no longer drive and hold a Massachusetts ID instead of a driver’s license. The MBTA plans to announce the pilot’s start date this fall.
Together, the three pilots aim to make MBTA travel more affordable and easier to use.
