Presented by Kevin J. Bernier, Shuttle Operations & Technology Manager, at 128 Business Council’s 2024 Annual Meeting (April 25, 2024).

“Life is about timing,” Kevin Bernier tells us, setting the tone for a presentation focused on what it really takes to make shuttle service work. Whether designing a new route or adjusting an existing one, every decision at 128BC is grounded in efficiency, reliability, and the commuter experience.

Kevin emphasized that the cooperative model allows members to share resources—enabling broader, more frequent service than any one site could afford alone. That shared structure not only saves money, but also reduces vehicle miles traveled, emissions, and congestion.

Kevin walked through how routes are designed around key MBTA stations like Alewife, Waltham Center, and Newton Highlands, extending the reach of public transit into job centers. These routes are built with an eye toward future adaptation: Our operations team constantly monitors usage and adjusts to meet changing demand.

Behind the wheel, professional drivers work stable, well-structured shifts and receive recognition for outstanding service. Several have driven with us for more than 20 years.

From maps and metrics to bathrooms and breaks, Kevin gave a glimpse into the thoughtful infrastructure behind every trip.
